My Experience At The Writing Sessions America ATL (WSAATL) DEFINE YOUR MARQUEE Retreat
November 8, 2015
Hello friends how have you been? I know it’s been a while since my last post but let me say I’m glad to be back sharing my insight with you once again. I am super excited about my experience at the 3rd annual Writing Sessions America National Retreat that took place in Atlanta GA on Oct 22-25. I have been to a few different industry conferences over the years and I must say that my time at the WSAATL conference ranks right at the top. Writing Sessions America is a national singer/songwriter network that is the brainchild of industry veteran Grammy Nominated A&R and consultant Kevin Shine that allows singers and songwriters to come together and network together to help each other write great songs as well as help each other in building and maintaining relationships that can help build their business and monetize their art. Writing Sessions America is broken down into two different elements that consist of “Music Business Excellence & Music Business Development. Music Business Excellence encompasses bringing quality industry professionals who have had success in the industry to share their expertise and how to succeed in the new landscape of the new digital music industry. Music Business Development is about teaching singers/songwriters how to build their businesses by giving them different types of tools to help in successfully creating profitable business models.
The retreat kicked off on with the ICON Awards in which WSAATL honors industry professionals who have made iconic contributions to the industry over their tenure. Some of the honorees included: music producers Teddy Riley, Alvin & Calvin Waters, Bryan-Michael Cox, and DJ Rogers Jr. Music Executives Jackie Rhinehart, Karen Marie Mason and Allen Johnston. This was a wonderful experience to be around such great and impactful individuals. There were also some great performances from some awesome indie artists to cap the night off.
The conference “work day” included Friday and Saturday with some incredible panels and workshops designed to help all of the attendees and participants learn from industry professionals various experiences in the industry and how to learn to navigate through this new landscape of the music business. They were panels and workshops ranging from marketing and promotions, publishing, vocal training, management, legal & accounting, placements etc.
The evening events for both nights of the retreat were absolutely incredible with a lot of up and coming artists having an opportunity to display and perform their music for a bevvy of industry professionals as well as the other conference attendees. Some of these events were events entitled “No Covers” which is an open mic started by Joselyn Best out of the DMV area. She wanted to create a platform for indie artists to be able to showcase and have confidence in their original work. A few of the other events were “The Soul Suite”, “Live Radio Unplugged” and “The Mic Is On” showcase. All of these events were incredible and so valuable to be at because they also provided a great building and networking atmosphere.
I often advise anyone who wants to really make some quality relationships in the industry they should attend industry events. This retreat was well worth the investment that I made into making myself better as well as my network. I want to thank Kevin AnR Shine for allowing me to be a group Rep for this great network of individuals who are passionate about music as well as the business side of the industry. I can’t wait until next year.
